GMW Guitarworks Empire Custom
From the GMW Guitarworks custom shop comes this very cool, and very thoroughly equipped Empire Custom. This one is serial number 036. Neck-through construction is clearly evident, and is in fact hard to miss - a beautifully grained and colored piece of Pao Ferro runs the length of the instrument. The rest of the body is burlwood (I think this is a Maple burl). Pickups are Duncan humbuckers, and this guitar also has an on-board L.R. Baggs piezo pickup system for acoustic tones. The whole setup is controlled by one five-way "Mega Switch", which is configured for coil tapping. A second mini-toggle switch selects either the buckers or piezo alone, or a blend of the two sources.
This instrument is customized with extensive inlay work. The Rosewood fretboard is inlaid from end to end with a beautiful vine and flower theme, done in Pearl and Abalone. The body and headstock are bound with Ivoroid, with a thick border of Abalone purfling. The neck is also bound with Ivoroid.
When talking about the tone of this guitar, it's hard to sum things up quickly. There are a wealth of tonal combinations you can call up - between the piezo and the humbuckers with coil tap availability, there are a lot of choices lurking beneath the deceptively simple control scheme. The electric humbucker tone is fat, meaty, and the output is quite strong, but not too thick. Single-coil tones have depth, but cut through very nicely.
Includes original G&G Hardshell case. Condition is mint.
