This is a great example of a New Orleans Guitars VooDoo model, a single cutaway custom design with a Presentation Grade Swamp Ash top. When we first began talking to Vincent at New Orleans Guitars about becoming a dealer, he asked what type of guitar would we like. I responded by saying that I wanted something that is first representative of what you make and then something that is an example of what is possible. Judge for yourself but I think he set the bar pretty high. Very high!
This is a single cutaway design with a five piece through the body neck. The body is Honduran Mahogany as is the 5 piece neck laminated with Maple. The top is an exceptional piece of Presentation Grade Swamp Ash Crotch with a natural finish. You will forget other Swamp Ash tops when you see this one. The neck and headstock are bound with three piece Maple/Cocobolo. The fretboard is Cocobolo that extends to the headstock face and truss rod cover.
The fretboard has a subtle Flame Inlay motif of Abalone. The Cocobolo on the headstock is left sanded to a 600 grit level and then oiled to closely match the color of the fretboard. The result is a flawless soft matt feel that closely matches the natural Cocobolo on the fretboard. The guitar is equipped with Chromed Tone Pros bridge and tail as well as Grover tuners. The pickups are a pair of Dimarzio’s with a Custom PAF-DP195 in the neck position wired series/parallel and a F spaced Air Zone - DP192 in the bridge in series. This is a great set of pickups for a 24 fret guitar at stage volumes, very touch sensitive and articulate. It has lots of balls but doesn’t color the wood’s tonal character.
The control knobs are natural wood bells recessed into the top with a three position pickup selector and phase switch. The over all finish work of this instrument is without equal. There is not a rough edge anywhere, and the combination of the highly figured Swamp Ash Crotch top with the Cocobolo fretboard and headstock is masterfully done.
